Filipinos love to have fun, and it is obvious in the way they celebrate fiestas or festivals. Any community celebration are considered special opportunities for people to extend hospitality and friendship to one another. It is also a way of portraying the country's culture for generations.
It is an all year round when Philippines celebrates its many festivals. It has been a tradition to all filipinos to celebrates its yearly festivals in every regions, provinces, and cities with fun-filled activities and excitement. The celebration is one way to commemorate a historical event that showcase our shared history, values and experiences from the past. It portays the culture that are handed down from generation.
Among many, street dancing is the main highlight of every festival, where you can see participants dress in fancy and colorful outfit dancing in the street to the beat of the drum. It's been said that the best months of the Philippines festivals are held on January, April, May, Octobel and December. The most populars are Sinulog in Cebu, Masskara in Bacolod, Ati-atihan in Aklan, Dinagyang in Iloilo, Moriones in Marinduque.
Here are some of our countries famous festivals -
PROCESSION of the BLACK NAZARENE (Quiapo, Manila) – It is held every year on 9th January. It is commonly the single largest festival of the year where thousands of devotees come to the district of Quiapo to join in the procession and witness the Feast of the Black Nazarene.
ATI-ATIHAN FESTIVAL (Kalibo, Aklan) – Held annually on every third Sunday of January in honor of the Santo Niño, this festival is the wildest among the country's fiestas were celebrants paint their faces and body with black soot and wear bright. Outlandish costumes as they dane in the street during the last three days of this two week-long festival.
SINULOG FESTIVAL (Cebu City) – Held also annually on every third Sunday of January. The festival honors the Holy Child, known as the Santo Niño the patron of Cebu. It features a street parade with participants dance to the rhythm of drums and trumpets. It is a dance ritual that commemorates the cebuano people's pagan origin.
DINAGYANG FESTIVAL (Iloilo City) – It is a religious and cultural festival held on the fouth Sunday of January both to honor the Santo Niño and to celebrate the arrival Malay settlers on Panay and the subsequent selling of the island to them by the Atis.
PANAGBENGA FESTIVAL (Baguio City) – It is a month- long flower festival herl during the month of February which was created as a tribute to the city's flower. The festival includes floats that are decorated with flowers, street dancing where participants wear a flower-inspired costumes.
KAAMULAN FESTIVAL (Malaybalay City, Bukidnon) – It is an ethnic-cultural festival that take place from the last week of February to the first week of March as a means of gathering for any purpose to celebrate the culture and tradition of the seven ethnic tribal groups that originally inhabited the province of Bukidnon. It is also said the only ethnic festival in the Philippines.
MARIONES FESTIVAL (Marinduque Island) – One of the most famous of Philippines festivals. It is an annually held on Holy Week, colorfully garbed and masked as Roman soldiers, locals reenact the life of Longinus culminating in his beheading. It is a tradition that inspired the creation of other festivals in the Philippines where cultural practices or folk history turned into street festivals.
PAHIYAS FESTIVAL (Lucban, Quezon) – It is a festival honoring the patron saint of farmers, St. Isidore, held every 15th of May. This festival showcases a street of houses which are adorned with fruits, vegetables, agricultural products, handicrafts and kiping.
OBANDO FERTILITY RITES (Obando, Bulacan) – It is a three day fiesta celebration held every May 17 to May 19 where men, women, and children dance along the streets together in colorful costumes as a sign of honoring their patrons for good harvest. What made this festival famous were the childless couples or women to participates in the street dance to pray for a child.
KADAYAWAN FESTIVAL (Davao City) – It is an annual festival held every third week of August in celebration of life, a thanksgiving for the gifts of nature, the wealth of culture, the bounties of harvest and the serenity of living.
MASSKARA FESTIVAL (Bacolod City) – It is a week-long festival nearest to 19th of October held each year. The festival features a street dance competition where people from all walk of life flock to the streets to witness the colorfully-masked dancers performing to the rhythm of Latin musical beats. The masks have to be smiling to project Bacolod already known as the City of Smiles.
HIGANTES FESTIVAL (Agono, Rizal) – The celebration coincides with the Feast of Saint Clement, the Patron Saint of Agono, held every 23rd of November. The festival was influencedby the Mexican art form of paper-mache brought by the Spanish priests to the Philippines. The festival is now promoted as tourisn-generating event in the country for it attracts numerous tourist from all over the world.
